Position Summary
We are a fast-paced, nimble, collaborative and strategic organization that thrives on being relevant and producing timely and high-quality content for our key audiences. We are seeking a communications director who will have the opportunity to drive our day-to-day work. They will lead all communications-related activities that advance the goals of America’s Voice. The communications director works closely with the directors of research and digital strategies to ensure coordination and maximum impact. This person will work with staff, consultants, and key allies to ensure there is daily rapid response to breaking events and a drum beat of targeted messaging, organize regular press events such as briefings, press conferences, and editorial board engagements, and elevate the voices of immigrants, experts, and other colleagues to advance a long-term pro-immigration media narrative. The communication director will work closely with the Chief of Programs to build relationships with key stakeholders, members of the press, organizational partners, coalitions, and allies. This position will manage staff and consultants and will work under the supervision of the Chief of Programs.
Buckets of Responsibilities
Strategy Development Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Chief of Programs to develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan that advances the organization’s goals, strengthens brand identity, and broadens understanding of organizational priorities.
- Incorporate public opinion research and best practices into communications strategies to ensure informed, data-driven messaging.
- Work with teams across the organization to ensure cohesion and message discipline.
Media Engagement:
- Develop and execute strategies to cultivate relationships with high-level external audiences, including media and key influencers.
- Serve as a communications counselor to leadership, providing strategic advice and guidance.
- Help shape the organization’s long-term narrative and ensure it is reflected in daily messaging.
- Act as one of the organization's chief spokespersons and lead point of contact for media interactions, ensuring messaging aligns with the organization's goals and objectives.
- Actively engage with and manage press relationships to elevate the organization's narrative on immigration.
- Engage with allied organizations to coordinate communications strategies and advise coalitions.
Team Management:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the communications team, including budgeting, planning, and staff development.
- Mentor and support staff through a collaborative approach, fostering professional growth and high performance.
- Establish and monitor staff performance goals, set clear objectives, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
Rapid Response Management:
- Lead the organization's rapid response communication efforts, ensuring timely and strategic messaging that reflects the organization’s voice and is in service of the organization’s goals.
- Oversee daily rapid-response calls and the drafting and editing of rapid-response products, ensuring input and collaboration with the Directors of Research and Social media, including talking points for partners.
- Organize press events and create materials for reporters, colleagues, and policymakers as needed.
Relationship Building:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with reporters, columnists, editorial boards, opinion leaders, and other influencers, positioning the organization as a go-to source for immigration news and insights.
- Proactively pitch organizational spokespeople and stories to further the organization’s narrative and enhance visibility.
Narrative and Messaging Oversight:
- Help shape the organization’s long-term narrative and ensure it is reflected in daily messaging.
- Provide strategic input on advocacy and political efforts, ensuring alignment between communications and broader organizational goals.
Representation and Advocacy:
- Serve as spokesperson for the organization in media appearances and public forums.
- Provide strategic input on advocacy and political efforts, ensuring alignment between communications and broader organizational goals with coalition partners and allies.
- Represent the organization in partner meetings and strategic convenings, actively participating in shaping the organization’s influence in the strategic communications activities of partners and allies.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressively responsible work experience in issue advocacy and/or campaign planning and execution in an advocacy organization.
- Proven track record of successful advocacy campaigns to mobilize public support for state and federal issue agendas.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Outstanding management and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with state, local or federal government, especially on Capitol Hill, is a plus.
- Fluency in Spanish and English, including written and digital communications, is required.

Compensation and Benefits
America’s Voice offers a competitive salary band of $95,000 - $110,000, commensurate
with experience and qualifications. America’s Voice offers comprehensive benefits, including fully covered premiums for yourself and your dependents for medical insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, and a 401k plan with generous employer match. There is occasional travel required, including regular meetings in Washington, DC. Proximity to Washington, DC is a bonus but not required.
